Korean food with great kimchi at Moim Modern Korean Cuisine , Atria Shopping Mall, Damansara Jaya

My favourite place for Korean food (Address: T-03A, Atria Shopping Gallery, Jalan SS 22/21, Ss 22, 47400 Petaling Jaya, Selangor). They have good set meals, and my favourite has to be the one with roast pork.


Their fried rice is also good and is a favourite with my daughter. 

Below is their Kimchi jigae set (kimchi stew with tofu and pork). Easily one of the best in town. Their stew is not just hot, it is flavourful which is what a lot of other Korean restaurants fail at. If you like kimchi stew, then this one is for you.

Below is their Kimchi san gyeop sal gui set (grilled pork with stir fried kimchi). Nice.....
 

This is a good place to have authentic Korean food, and they make great kimchi. 

Every set meal comes with soup and refillable side dishes, and I always asks for more refills. 


Especially their Kimchi. Mmmmmmm, yummy!

Sometimes when you want something to remind you of home but is too much of a hassle to cook it yourself, visit Aunty Melon Home Cooking SS2 (Address: 26, Jalan SS 2/24, SS 2, 47300 Petaling Jaya, Selangor). It is a quaint little restaurant that serves home cooked meals. Their business hours (update - they are now opened for breakfast from 8.30 am onwards i.e. 8.30am-3.00pm and 6.00pm-9.00pm): Their selection is quite appetising, and their portions are suitable for two persons. If a family of four is there, you can try more variety. Their food is delicious and reasonably priced, and their service was prompt and courteous. We have found a nice place to eat, and will definitely go there again.  The menu below is only one of two pages. The other page is mostly soups. The pictures here looked so good, that i totally forgot to take the other page (update: managed to take the other page on our next visit).

Authentic Sarawak noodles at Mama Ting, SS2, Petaling Jaya

Updated Feb 2021: With 7th mile kitchen moving out of PJ, Mama Ting is a good option for Sarawak comfort foods.  If you are staying in Petaling Jaya, and looking to try Sarawak noodles, you would not go wrong to try them at Mama Ting (Address: 8, Jalan SS 2/10, SS 2, 47300 Petaling Jaya, Selangor). The Kolok Mee is springy and is quite good. I am a sucker for tomato koay teow noodles. Of course, I prefer the original in Sarawak but this one will have to suffice until then. Even had time to dress up my plate (above). Had the Sarawak Laksa (below) recently, and tasted good. Enjoyed every bit of it. The gravy is tasty without being too thick, an the bee hoon noodles are the tougher kind (just nice for Sarawak Laksa). I have managed to include their menu here. As you can see, very traditional Sarawak fare.      And I have also included their business hours to avoid disappointments. Go and try this place!

This stall only opens at night (now with the CMCO; from 7 pm - 10 pm. In the past until 11pm), and is located somewhere behind the SS2 Perodua Service Center. It's address is as below: Jalan SS 2/1, SS 2, 47301 Petaling Jaya, Selangor.     As you can see they have a small menu but their foods are priced affordably, and all very tasty.     Their Teo Chew Mee Diao makes for a light and healthy 'vegetarian' meal. Look out for their ginger sauce. Spicy and potent! Something you cannot go without. Their Guan Chang Kueh and Chai Kueh. Nice side dishes to go with a main meal. Both are very different, and will suit a variety of taste buds. I prefer the Guan Chang Kueh which has more bite to it than the soft Chai Kueh (which my wife prefers). The best carbonara in town is in The Good Batch

My daughter's favourite haunt for carbonara. As an aficionado for all things carbonara, I have to take her word for it when she swears without any hesitation that The Good Batch (No. 53, Jalan SS 21/1a, Damansara Utama, 47400 Petaling Jaya, Selangor) serves the best carbonara in Petaling Jaya. Due to the movement control order, we can only order take-away but it was always a good dining experience whenever we are there. The crispy turkey ham carbonara made to perfection. Not to creamy, not too dry. Undoubtedly my daughter's favourite. My son's favourite at The Good Batch i.e. Crispy Chicken Waffles and Orange Citrus Honey. I know it is not good to keep indulging my son's sweet tooth, but it does taste delightful whenever I manage to steal a bite.   In these trying times if you are able to, do support these restaurants. Only with our support, can they continue to serve us good food.

Traditional Sibu Kampua noodles and Foo Chow red wine rice noodles at Restaurant Tea Time

Sometimes when you are looking for something simple and quick e.g. a plate of Sibu Kampua noodles (a.k.a kolok mee), you can find a satisfying meal at the SIBU Noodle House stall at the Restaurant Tea Time (23-1, Mayang Plaza, Jalan SS 26/4, Taman Mayang Jaya, 47301 Petaling Jaya, Selangor). Nothing extravagant or fancy about this place. Just a simple Kampua dish in traditional Sibu style (kolok mee in fried shallot oil). The taste is something that you can eat regularly. A simple Sibu Kampua noodle dish. I chose the one with minced meat. They also serve with char siu (caramelized roast pork slices). A rare find, Foo Chow red wine rice noodles (mee sua). Not many stalls have this dish, and even less has one that tastes as good as this.

Dry chicken curry noodles at New Grand View Restaurant at Taman SEA, Petaling Jaya (before CMCO)

We had a quick lunch at the New Grand View Restaurant (Address: 44, Jalan SS 23/11, Taman Sea, 47400 Petaling Jaya, Selangor) before the next CMCO (conditional movement control order). I just wanted to eat out before the lock-down. When we were there, I remembered how good the dry chicken curry noodle was. You have to order it from the Wan Tan Mee stall but if possible, choose the broad noodles as it holds the gravy and flavour much better than the finer wan tan mee noodle. The dry chicken curry is superb. The gravy tastes great and the potatoes are soft and nice. The chicken meat is well-cooked, tender with flavour. Give it a try. You will not regret it.

Support our local hawkers: have pan mee or other for breakfast / lunch

What a year 2020 is turning out to be!!! With so many restrictions, many hawker stalls might not survive this financial hardship. And what is Malaysia without her myriad choice of hawker food! So, wear a mask, maintain the necessary SOPs but do go out /pack for your meals. Pan mee is a flat noodles in either dry gravy or soup. It is quite the staple food, and you can find it in most restaurants. A good one that we regularly eat is at Restaurant Gembira (Address: 39, Jalan SS 24/8, Taman Megah, 47301 Petaling Jaya, Selangor).   Either dry or soup pan mee, they are both good with all the usual toppings (fried anchovies, minced pork, meat balls etc) expected in pan mee. So go out and have or tapau (pack) a nice meal.

Hands down the best roast duck in Petaling Jaya

The best roast duck in Petaling Jaya has to be the one at Loong Foong Seafood Restaurant (Address: 1, Jalan 20/13, Taman Paramount, 46300 Petaling Jaya, Selangor). My whole family loves the roast duck here, and whenever we have an urge to eat roast duck, this is the only place we will go. Of course, we are not the only ones who thinks alike. Therefore if you want to take away('ta pau') the roast duck, my best advice for you is to go there by 4.45pm. Your queue will be much shorter.  Below a whole roast duck (chopped). Current price is RM65 per duck. The skin is crispy and the meat flavourful.The duck was well marinated before roasting; a testament to the tasty meat with each bite. There is also a traditional Malaysian pickled vegetables, Nyonya style or Nyonya acar (cucumber). As the name entails, it is pickled cucumber, carrots, cabbage, long beans with ground peanuts. Quick and simple Japanese food at Sushi Mentai

There are of course many fancy Japanese restaurants in the Klang valley. But these often come at a price. There are times when you just want something Japanese but simple and at a relatively lower price point. It is at these times, I will find myself going to Sushi Mentai. It is a kaiten sushi (conveyor belt sushi) restaurant but with a wide variety of noodles, rice, snacks, bentos and ala carte. The one I now usually go to is the one at SS24, Taman Megah (14, Jalan SS 24/13, Taman Megah, 47301 Petaling Jaya, Selangor).  They have clean and systematic setups, and the quality of food is consistent, above average in my opinion (and for the price).   This is the curry udon with one ebi furai (crispy fried prawn). A nice change once in a while from the more popular wakame udon (seaweed udon) below.   Sometimes we will just order their karaage chicken (Japanese fried chicken) (above) to go with a bowl of rice and a bowl of soup e.g. Asari miso

Hungry for supper: Roadside Chee Cheong Fun at SS2, Petaling Jaya

When we were university students, we tended to be hungry at night. And when looking for a place to have supper, price is of course, a crucial point especially for university students at that time. There is a Chee Cheong Fun stall by the road (address: SS2 / 66, 47300 Petaling Jaya, Selangor) that is an old favourite for students around SS2, Petaling Jaya. It can be quite crowded at night, so be ready to wait in the queue. The Chee Cheong Fun is the wetter type with loads of sweet sauce as its gravy, and dollops of toasted sesame but the creme de la creme has to be the dried pig's skin. Difficult to find elsewhere, and here it tastes superb. Of course, there are loads of other sides to choose from (e.g. meat ball, fish ball, dried tofu skin etc). There is no lacking in variety. I like that it's economical, tastes good and is available even after 9pm. A good place to hang out for supper with old friends.      Use the map below to support this class
